Sepang Municipal Council director says illegal gaming premises 'resume business in hours' after raids, with local authorities limited to only seizing items not prosecuting operators.
SEPANG: Owners of illegal gambling premises here continue to undermine the law by running their operations despite being repeatedly raided by local authorities.
The Sepang Municipal Council (MPS) disclosed there were operators who were raided 18 times but were back in business three hours later.
“They remain undaunted by the authorities as the existing laws do nothing to curb these activities, MPS enforcement division deputy director Hairol Azman Razali said yesterday.
“MPS has provisions under the Cyber Centres & Cyber Cafes By-Laws 2007, but our role is limited to the task of seizing things.
“However, the Gambling Act, which is under the jurisdiction of other authorities, have provisions which are more extensive and those authorities also have the power to prosecute owners in courts,” Hairol said.
Speaking to reporters after leading operations against illegal online gambling operations in Dengkil today, Hairol said this year, they conducted 200 raids and seized 18,684 computers worth RM2 million.
Dengkil recorded the highest rate of illegal gambling activities with 112 premises sealed and most of the patrons were civil servants from Putrajaya.
Hairol said they had sought the cooperation of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) to restrict access to illegal gambling sites, mostly from abroad.
Earlier, the operation which took about two hours saw 11 gambling premises raided and dozens of computers seized, with the total worth of the confiscated items estimated at RM275,000.
