PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has claimed those who used 1MDB money to perform the Hajj, will not have their Hajj “accepted” (tidak mabrur).

The fierce 1MDB critic said this was because 1MDB funds were allegedly stolen by Prime Minister Najib Razak.

“Najib can give (money), why he can give is because he stole the money. Is stolen money halal or not? If he gives us stolen money to perform the Hajj, is it good or not?”

“That is what he does every year by sending 1,000 people to perform the Hajj with stolen money. I think that Hajj will not be accepted (tidak mabrur), less accepted (kurang mabrur),” he said in a speech during a joint ceramah with Amanah on Dec 23 at Taman Mergong, Alor Setar, Kedah.

But today Pahang Mufti Abdul Rahman Osman responded to Dr Mahathir’s comments by saying only God can decide whether a pilgrim’s Hajj is “accepted” (mabrur) or not.

He told FMT when contacted that whether a pilgrim’s Hajj was accepted or not had nothing to do with the source of funds for their pilgrimage.

Rahman said whether a person’s Hajj was accepted or not would only be known after a pilgrimage was performed.

“The pilgrim will become a better person, do more charitable works, and that means the Hajj has been accepted,” he said, adding it had nothing to do with money.

Rahman said if a person gave a pilgrim money to perform the Hajj, that money would belong to the pilgrim and it would not be right for the pilgrim to question the source of the money.

“Hajj is an obligation for those who can afford and those who can afford to help others to perform the Hajj. It is not wrong to accept money from anyone to perform the Hajj.”

Since 2011, Yayasan 1MDB has sponsored mosque committee members to perform the Hajj.

In 2011, a total of 111 pilgrims from around the country were sent to perform their Hajj. In 2012, this number increased to 400, in 2013 it was 800, in 2014 it was 1,000 and last year, 1,200 pilgrims were sponsored.

In 2016, some 150 people, including imams were sponsored.
