He accuses Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim of not doing his homework.
PETALING JAYA: The Barisan Nasional’s strategic communications (BNSC) unit has slammed DAP’s Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim for making false allegations about a government contract given to Umno-owned publisher of Utusan Malaysia for the supply of computer tablets to school teachers in the country.
Its deputy director, Eric See-To, said Sim was wrong to say that the 182,712 units of tablets were supplied by Utusan Melayu (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd for double the market price.
“Sim calculated the cost to be RM832. He then checked the price online at Lazada to be RM388 per tablet.
“While I had not had the chance to contact Utusan or anyone from the Ministry of Education, a simple check online showed that the contract given to Utusan is not just for the bare tablet but includes the Tutor Guru application developed, owned and operated by Utusan, as well as a subscription to the Utusan ePaper, the daily newspaper, to be delivered to the teachers online every day,” See-To said in a statement.
He said there would certainly be licensing and maintenance cost for the Tutor Guru software while a year’s subscription to Utusan ePaper costs RM180 per year.
“In fact, this cost was already explained in Parliament in November 2016 to YB Nurul Izzah,” he said.
SeeTo said there could be other commitments in the contract with Utusan too, such as logistics, helpline or maintenance.
“My point remains the same. If YB Steven Sim is interested in the truth, instead of making false accusations, he could have just Googled and he would get his answer.
“It took me 5 seconds to find out about this. Why couldn’t Sim do the same or is his integrity as an MP not worth 5 seconds?”
Sim had recently urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate the issuance of the contract.
He said the project should have been awarded through an open tender for the education ministry to benefit from the lowest possible costing.
Deputy Education Minister P Kamalanathan had told the Dewan Rakyat that Utusan was given the contract to supply the 180,000 tablets, for which some RM152 million had been spent.
