PETALING JAYA: In what could be seen as a clear sign that the general election is coming soon, the rural and regional development ministry has requested all state and district leaders to submit the list of public amenities to the ministry by mid-January.

Bernama reported Rural and Regional Development Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob as saying that the amenities included street lights, repairing and painting of fences of surau and repairing small roads in villages.

“I request the leaders at parliamentary level to send the list because they know which villages need the amenities. All the lists must reach us by the middle of January.

“If there is an allocation, we can immediately implement it,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama after attending the Terengganu Village Street Lighting (VSL) programme in Kuala Nerus yesterday.

Referring to the VSL, Ismail assured local leaders, especially members of the village development and security committees nationwide, that the electricity bills arising from its use will be absorbed by the federal government.

“The government already covered the RM70 million bill for all the VSL installations last year,” Ismail said, according to the national news agency.

The Federal Constitution states that a general election needs to be called when Parliament is dissolved or it reaches a maximum term of five years. The current Parliament kicked off its term on June 24, 2013, therefore Parliament will automatically be dissolved as of June 24, 2018.

As a general election needs to be called no later than two months after Parliament is dissolved, therefore, the last possible date for GE14 will be Aug 24, 2018.
