Petrol station worker saves baby born in toilet

She says she was afraid the mother, who appeared angry, may dump it somewhere.

baby-feet (1)BALING: A petrol station worker says she will never forget the moment a woman handed her a baby boy that was just born in the station’s toilet.

Nurul Shuhada Mat Shukri, 25, said in the 2.15pm incident, she had persuaded the woman in her 30s, who had just got out of the petrol station toilet, carrying “something” wrapped in batik cloth to hand over the baby.

“She was angry but I kept on persuading her to hand over the wrapped package, believed to be a newborn baby, as I heard a cry. I feared she would do something foolish.

“If I did not do anything, I was worried the woman would dump the baby.

“Once I got the baby, I immediately lodged a police report before the baby was sent to the hospital for treatment,” she said when met by reporters at the petrol station here today.

Baling district police chief Supt Shariffuddin Yusuf said the baby was at the Baling Hospital and in good health.

The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for concealing birth.

Baling Welfare Department officer Shamsul Izrin Isahak said the department would seek a temporary custody order under Section 25( 2) (A) of the Child Act 2001 from Baling Sessions Court.

The baby would later be placed at the Taman Bakti Children’s Home in Kepala Batas, Penang.
