KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner says the prime minister has never instructed the agency to take action against any individual.

Dzulkifli Ahmad also said he had never been pressured by any politician to act against someone else.

“Since Aug 1, 2016 till Dec 4, 2017 (during his tenure), I want to state that Prime Minister Najib Razak has never at any time given me instructions to take any action or not to take any action.

“But what we frequently hear on social media is that MACC is dictated to or shackled by the nation’s leaders. That never happened,” he said at conference today.

He said MACC has full freedom to investigate and take action according to his and his team’s decisions.

“We have to understand that too many issues of corruption and abuse of power have been politicised. That is the problem

“The problem in our country is that all issues are politicised, and this becomes worse as the general election approaches.”

Dzulkifli said public confidence in the MACC and corruption issues was at the lowest level before he joined the agency.

“In comparison, the current situation has changed. Confidence (in MACC) has surged because of various initiatives we have implemented.

“I made this promise to Malaysians: every week will see (at least) one investigation, and cases we investigate will be prosecuted in court. This is our promise and one we have not broken.”
