Bangladeshi trader calls the police after officer assaulted him at his shop.
GEORGE TOWN: Police have arrested an immigration officer accused of regularly extorting cash and cigarettes from a Bangladeshi banana wholesaler.
Northeast district police chief ACP Anuar Omar said police arrested the 29-year-old immigration officer at a shop in Jalan Dato Keramat here yesterday.
Anuar said the 49-year-old Bangladeshi trader had set up shop under his wife’s name as she was a local.
Anuar said the Bangladeshi man told police two immigration officers had approached him and scolded him for being rude to a government officer. He was then allegedly kicked and assaulted.
However, when police arrived at the shop, they only found one immigration officer. The officer had a valid identification from the department.
“Later, police officers found out that in September, the immigration officer had gone to the shop, rolled down the shutters, and grabbed RM700 from a drawer and three packs of Mervius cigarettes.
“Since then, the officer had been regularly going to the shop to demand free cigarettes,” Anuar told reporters here today.
Policemen also found a Prisons’ Department warrant card and an Immigration Department’s pass on the suspect.
“The suspect then admitted to policemen that he had indeed extorted money and cigarettes from the Bangladeshi man for the past three months.
“Prior to his service with the Immigration, the suspect was a warden with the Prisons Department for two years since 2014. He had a prior case involving the possession of ‘ketum water’,”Anuar said.
Anuar said police confiscated the suspect’s belongings, which included a sling bag containing a Bangladeshi passport.
The case will be investigated under Section 395 for gang robbery which carries a 20 year jail term and whipping upon conviction.
