BUKIT MERTAJAM: Penang PKR Youth chief Asrol Sani Abdul Razak has quit the party with 70 other disgruntled members today, citing a weak party leadership in the state and poor choice of candidates fielded in the general election.
He was also particularly disappointed that he was not selected as Bertam state seat candidate, with the party giving up the seat to PPBM.
Asrol said he was Bertam PKR coordinator and had worked the ground for a long time. He said he was supposed to be made candidate in Bertam.
“The state party leadership is weak and has not listened to the needs of the grassroots. We have been doing all the work here.
“By leaving the party, I hope PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim sees this and knows that PKR has deviated from its original struggles,” Asrol said at a press conference at a restaurant in Bandar Perda here today.
He said the decision to field PPBM’s Yaakob Osman as a candidate in the Penaga state seat had also resulted in disaster, with him being disqualified as a bankrupt.
Asrol said the state PKR leadership was weak and kowtowed to the DAP-led Penang government, despite winning the state together under the Pakatan banner.
He said PKR has been playing second fiddle for a long time in the Penang government, with DAP calling most of the shots in the state.
“The state PKR chief is weak … there are more members, who are not here, who will be quitting as well.”
In an immediate reply, state PKR chief Mansor Othman said Asrol could have stayed on to take over the reins of the party.
“If he thinks he is so strong, why not ask him to take over the party (leadership)?”
