KUALA LUMPUR: Television personality Azwan Ali today condemned popular singer Sheila Majid over her posting on Twitter seen as criticising the government’s failure to address the weak economy and rising cost of living.
The staunchly pro-government entertainer who is also the younger brother of PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali, said he was shocked by Sheila’s comment, adding that she was not being grateful for her datukship.
“When she vented like that, she damaged the new generation,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the Umno general assembly here.
He said Sheila “should use a little common sense and not be emotional”.
“When people respect her, she goes and make a comment like that, that’s committing suicide.”
A Twitter post by Sheila on the high cost of living and the weak ringgit went viral yesterday.
“Food is expensive, ringgit is weak, cost of living is high & jobs are scarce. Msians are becoming tired & angry for being squeezed over debts we did not create.
“Stop making excuses & looking for faults. Focus on the job of getting our country back on track! Disappointing!” the singer said, drawing a strong response from Umno leaders and supporters on social media.
But Azwan said Sheila’s opinion would not rattle Barisan Nasional (BN).
“This will not shake the BN. Najib (Razak) doesn’t need a disruptive artiste to win the general election. Najib is a huge name, what does he need with a disruptive artiste?” he added.
Azwan also trained his guns on younger artistes critical of the government.
“You are supposed to be a big star, if you succeed, if you have a datukship, wealth, millions of fans, isn’t that due to the government? Go to hell!” said Azwan.
Actress Fathia Latiff recently questioned the targetting of Pakatan Harapan chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad through the recently concluded royal commission of inquiry in Bank Negara Malaysia’s foreign exchange losses in the 1990s.
Fathia was then criticsed by an aide of the prime minister, Rizal Mansor, who said artistes should not become the opposition’s tools.
