Rest today, for we start work tomorrow, says Fahmi

PKR's Fahmi Fadzil beats BN and PAS candidates to become new Lembah Pantai MP.

PETALING JAYA: PKR’s Fahmi Fadzil, who won the Lembah Pantai parliamentary seat, said he will start his first day of work as MP by going around the constituency thanking voters.

“Let’s get some rest today because tomorrow we start work,” he told reporters after being announced as the winner of the three-way contest for Lembah Pantai.

Fahmi, who is PKR communications director, thanked the people of Lembah Pantai for their support.

“I vow to look after everyone’s welfare, including that of members of Umno and PAS, because we are all Malaysians,” he said at the Bukit Bandaraya Community Centre.

“I ask everyone to return to your homes and pray for our safety and well-being. God willing, we can rebuild Malaysia.”

Fahmi beat BN’s Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin and PAS’ Fauzi Abu Bakar with a 5,598-vote majority.

This is a much higher majority than the incumbent, PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah, received in GE13.

Then, she had edged out Raja Nong Chik and independent Rusli Baba by 1,847 votes.

Malay-majority Lembah Pantai has 80,346 voters. All in all, Fahmi had garnered 33,313 votes. Former minister Raja Nong Chik received 27,715 votes and Fauzi got 5,277 votes. A total of 538 votes were spoilt.

Voter turnout was 82%.

Outside the cordoned-off section of the community centre, over 500 supporters waited for several hours and cheered as he came out to address them.

“Together we will save Malaysia,” he said and thanked them.
