KUALA LUMPUR: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V hopes that all procedures relating to the proceedings of the Pardons Board Committee for a royal pardon for PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim will be finalised on Wednesday.

Istana Negara Datuk Pengkalan Bijaya Diraja Wan Ahmad Dahlan Ab Aziz said in a statement tonight that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong was pleased and satisfied with all procedures related to the proceedings of the Pardons Board Committee on the matter that should be finalised tomorrow (Tuesday) 11am.

“However, the Prime Minister’s Office has called for the meeting to be postponed to Wednesday (May 16) at 11am.

“The Yang di-Pertuan Agong wishes that this matter will be finalised on Wednesday before the start of the Ramadan month,” he said.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said at a press conference at the Perdana Leadership Foundation this evening that Anwar’s release was “a little delayed” as the pardon process must be carried out according to the law.

Earlier, Anwar’s daughter, Nurul Izzah, who is PKR vice-president, told reporters that the Pardons Board committee will meet at 5pm tomorrow.

She said she was informed of the 5pm meeting by Anwar’s lawyer, R Sivarasa.

“5pm is only the beginning of the Pardons Board committee session. You have to wait,” she said after visiting her father at the Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital here.

Asked if Anwar would be released tomorrow, Nurul Izzah said: “God willing, tomorrow.”

In 2015, Anwar was sentenced to five years’ jail after the Federal Court upheld his guilty verdict on a sodomy charge.

On Friday, Mahathir had said the King had expressed his willingness to grant an immediate pardon to Anwar.

“It is a full pardon, which means he is not only given pardon but will also be immediately released,” said Mahathir.
