Pakatan Harapan will defend interests of all, says Anwar

PKR de facto leader also issues reminder to other leaders against being arrogant.

Anwar says country will not be secure if PH fails to protect the welfare of the majority Malays and Bumiputeras.

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim says although he and Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad are Malay leaders, this in no way meant a return to a racial agenda.

In a speech at his home in Segambut today, Anwar said Pakatan Harapan received support from all races, and it therefore must represent the conscience of all Malaysians.

He said the May 9 polls showed that the people did not agree with former prime minister Najib Razak’s administration.

“It even happened in Kelantan and Terengganu; it’s just that they chose PAS there. It’s okay, it’s their democratic right, but still the people rejected Najib.

“The people of all races supported us, Malays, Indians, Chinese, Kadazans and Dayaks, right up to Puncak Borneo in Sarawak, one of the more rural places in the country.”

He said the people supported Mahathir and him as they felt they could uphold justice.

Anwar said winning the polls this time didn’t mean Malay rights and privileges wouldn’t be defended.

“I told Lim Kit Siang and everyone. This country will not be secure if we fail to protect the welfare of the majority Malays and Bumiputeras.

“At the same time, it will be totally unjust if we don’t protect the interests of minority Chinese, Indians and others. This is the basis of our struggle.”

Anwar also said the May 9 polls wasn’t a contest between elites, as tens of thousands of ordinary people had supported Pakatan Harapan.

“So we can’t be arrogant. Don’t think we can monopolise power.”

Anwar said leaders who thought like that would have only succeeded in replacing the arrogance and excesses of those they had condemned to the masses.
