GEORGE TOWN: Thirty police reports were lodged over the alleged theft of identity during the 14th general election throughout the state yesterday.

Penang police chief A Thaiveegan said the reports were lodged after the victims were informed by the Election Commission (EC) that their names were marked as having already voted, when in fact they had not.

At a press conference today, he said the police had detained 14 men aged between 21 and 61, in Bukit Minyak and Jelutong, for causing a commotion as the ballot boxes were taken to a vote-tallying centre.

The suspects were remanded until next week.

Meanwhile, in Seremban, the Negeri Sembilan police opened two investigation papers involving two cases in connection with the voting process yesterday.

Negeri Sembilan police chief Noor Azam Jamaluddin said the first investigation paper involved a 14-year-old disabled girl who allegedly distributed fake ballot papers in the compound of a polling centre in Port Dickson.

The second investigation paper involved an incident where a ballot box from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Dato Mohd Said in Nilai was seized and damaged by a group of men as soon as it arrived at a vote tallying centre in Wisma Negeri here.
