Opposition supporters in Sabah will turn to BN, says confident Umno newcomer

We don’t underestimate the opposition but their supporters are our friends and we believe most of them will eventually support BN, says Kemabong candidate Jamawi Jaafar.

KOTA KINABALU: Umno’s candidate and new face Jamawi Jaafar is confident opposition supporters in Sabah’s southern district of Tenom will eventually vote for BN come election time.

The Tenom Umno Youth chief was announced as a candidate for the state seat of Kemabong by Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Musa Aman here today.

The Tenom parliamentary constituency consists of the Kemabong and Melalap state seats.

Kemabong was last held by Rubin Balang, who will now stand in the Tenom parliament constituency, while Radin Malleh will defend his Melalap seat.

Rubin won by a 3,032-vote majority in the last election, beating three other contenders from SAPP, STAR and PKR.

Tenom is one of the areas where the opposition, particularly Parti Warisan Sabah, led by former federal minister and Umno vice-president Shafie Apdal, has been actively campaigning.

“I want to reward the party by winning in Kemabong,” Jamawi, who is also a national Umno Youth exco member, told FMT.

“We don’t underestimate the opposition but their supporters are our friends and we believe most of them will eventually support BN.

“But as Umno is the backbone to BN, the people will choose the one with the biggest ‘umbrella’ — the steadier and stronger party.”
