KUALA LUMPUR: PAS has dismissed Amanah’s claim that its party members would “secretly” vote for Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the 14th general election (GE14).

Bukit Gantang MP Idris Ahmad said such a claim had no basis and was unfounded as no proof had been offered.

“Tell us who these members are. We can also say that a lot of Amanah members are supporting us secretly,” he told reporters outside the Dewan Rakyat today.

He was responding to former PAS lawmaker Mahfuz Omar, who joined Amanah today.

The Pokok Sena MP had told reporters that a lot of PAS members want to leave the party but were afraid to do so. Mahfuz was confident these people would vote for PH secretly.

However, Idris said he knows his constituents well and they would be going all out to support PAS.

Idris, who is PAS vice-president, said 2,000 people signed up to be members of PAS every month and the Islamist party was in a comfortable position ahead of GE14.

“We are just waiting for Prime Minister Najib Razak to announce the GE14 date,” he said, adding that PAS is strong and has capable candidates.

PAS has previously said it stands a better chance at contesting more seats in GE14 as it is no longer tied to any political party or pact, except for Gagasan Sejahtera.

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan was reported to have said he was now confident the party has a better chance contesting in urban areas due to the growing acceptance by city folk.

“We would be contesting in more than 100 parliamentary seats, and have set ourselves a target of winning at least 40 of these seats.”
