2 Sabah opposition KDM parties form alliance for GE14

Parti Cinta Sabah and Parti Kerjasama Anak Negeri still want to negotiate seats with Pakatan Harapan and Parti Warisan Sabah despite the bad blood with the latter.

KOTA KINABALU: Two Sabah Kadazandusun Murut (KDM)-based opposition parties signed a pact here today to share out the 25 KDM-majority state seats ahead of the 14th general election (GE14).

Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS) president Wilfred Bumburing and Parti Kerjasama Anak Negeri (Anak Negeri) president Henrynus Amin inked the agreement, which will also see the pact’s candidates contesting under PCS’ symbol. About 200 supporters were present.

Both parties are still negotiating the seats each will be allocated but are confident they can reach a consensus soon.

They are targeting to capture at least 22 out of the 60 seats in the state assembly.

Henrynus mooted the idea of a pact among opposition KDM political leaders last month but only PCS welcomed it.

Both the leaders took a swipe at Parti Warisan Sabah president Shafie Apdal whose party had been accused of not wanting to budge from their demand for a lion’s share of the state seats in any electoral pact.

Shafie was also captured on video saying that PCS was friendly with Barisan Nasional (BN), and that Bumburing had met Prime Minister Najib Razak.

However, Bumburing and Henrynus, both former BN stalwarts, pointed out they still harboured hopes of striking a seat arrangement with Warisan and Pakatan Harapan (PH) to topple the ruling government.

“I’ve seen the video but maybe Shafie was over excited and mentioned my name in his speech but he knows well it’s not true.

“Words like these do not augur well for a leader who aspires to be the chief minister of Sabah,” Bumburing said.

Henrynus said he took exception towards accusations that involved his party although he did not mention if Warisan had anything to do with them.

“Those who accused me of receiving money from Umno, come and show me. Tell me who did I meet, who gave me the money and how much.

“I want everybody to account for their words and actions. In politics, the easiest way to run us down is to insinuate we received money.

“Just because we don’t have money, don’t accuse us of taking money from Umno. We are doing crowd-funding. We can’t do roadshows or things like that but you can do roadshows spending RM300,000 … where is that money from?” he said, apparently referring to Warisan.

On seat negotiations with other opposition parties, Bumburing said the tone used by Shafie implied that the former Umno vice-president believed he was the custodian of the seats.

“Shafie said he can’t give all the seats they want (as if) he has absolute ownership of the seats.

“It doesn’t augur well for negotiations. These words never came out from any of the PH leaders in KL,” he said.

Bumburing maintained that no one party should contest more than half of the state seats.

“We don’t want to succumb to pressure to give away seats. We cannot accept that, we must be on equal terms,” he said.

Henrynus added: “We’d like to be pragmatic regardless of what people say against one another. At the end of the day, I think we need to be pragmatic enough to be able to compromise.”

Meanwhile, Bumburing shot down a possible alliance with four-party opposition Gabungan Sabah, saying he still saw them as a BN-friendly group.

“They have questionable communications with the BN,” he said.

Henrynus added they could not work with Gabungan because their policies were totally opposite, terming as “ridiculous” their proposal to reinstate the British colonial residency system in the state’s administration.

“They are anti-Malaya, anti-federal and friendly to (secession movement) Sabah Sarawak Keluar Malaysia.

“We disagree with Umno and BN and want to replace them as the government but we are for the institution of the Agong, the federal government and constitution. We cannot go against that,” he said.
