Cops nab Jamal Yunos over ‘insulting behaviour’

Sg Besar Umno division chief sends WhatsApp message shortly after arrest, says it was 'in relation to Zaid Ibrahim issue'.

jamal-arrestPETALING JAYA: Sungei Besar Umno division chief Jamal Yunos was arrested tonight over threats he made to DAP’s Zaid Ibrahim, The Star reported.

Jamal, who attended the last day of the Umno general assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre today, was taken to the nearby Dang Wangi district police headquarters (IPD) at about 9.25pm.

According to the daily, he was handcuffed when police brought him for questioning.

Shortly after his arrest, Jamal had time to send out a WhatsApp message to friends and supporters saying that he was being detained over his comments pertaining to Zaid.

“I have been arrested by the police and will be taken to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters. This is in relation to the Zaid Ibrahim issue,” he said in his WhatsApp message.

The Star quoted Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Shaharuddin Abdullah as saying that Jamal would be investigated under Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act.

Section 504 deals with intentional insult to provoke a breach of the peace while Section 14 deals with the offence of insulting behaviour.

The arrest may be linked to Zaid’s posting yesterday evening on Twitter that he would seek to meet with Deputy Prime Minister Zahid Hamidi, who is also home minister, as soon as possible over “his safety and that of his family”.

Zaid’s tweet was believed to be a response to Jamal saying earlier in the day, that he would “hunt down” Zaid if the authorities did not arrest him over his remark allegedly insulting the Selangor sultan.

“I will personally hunt him down. I know where he lives,” Jamal had reportedly said.

The controversy started earlier this week when Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah had reportedly said that Mahathir’s political agenda was motivated by “deep hatred” and that “his anger will burn the whole country”.

In response, Zaid had tweeted: “The Selangor sultan should be careful with his words. No one is immune when the country burns.”

His tweet had caused an uproar, especially among Umno leaders and members who called for action to be taken against Zaid for his criticism of the sultan.
