Hisham: I’m for Najib and Zahid winning uncontested in Umno polls

The Umno vice-president says this will be good for party unity and also ensure all members focus on winning GE14.

Hishammuddin-Hussein-najib-zahid-1KUALA LUMPUR: Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein supports a proposal for the top two positions in Umno to be uncontested during next year’s party elections.

In an interview with The Star, he also said his biggest fear was that the Barisan Nasional would win the 14th general election without the support of non-Malays.

He said a no-contest situation for Umno’s top two posts would ensure the focus of members would remain on the 14th general election. It would also prevent certain people from pitting the party’s two top leaders against each other.

“The most important thing for us is that the Umno machinery and leadership, at all levels, focuses on GE14.

“If it means that the top two posts remain uncontested because there has been a motion at the division level for these posts not to be contested, then I’m supportive of that,” Hishammuddin told The Star ahead of the party’s annual assembly.

The Masjid Tanah Umno division, in August, passed a motion proposing that party presiden Najib Razak and Ahmad Zahid Hamidi remain in the top two posts. Zahid was appointed by the Umno supreme council to carry out the duties of the deputy president after the party suspended, and later sacked, Muhyiddin Yassin in February last year.

The Star quoted Hishammuddin as saying: “It (also) prevents people from trying to pit Zahid against me, Zahid against the prime minister or me against the prime minister.”

He said he had a good relationship with Zahid, adding: “I think at the end of the day, we both realise that the party needs the three of us to be intact.

“I would not be making a personal statement about the position of the president and deputy president if I did not mean it.”

However, Hishammuddin said, the proposal would not be raised during the Umno assembly as a motion.

“I made it very clear to the speakers that we should not touch on Umno’s upcoming elections because it is now too close to the general election,” he said.

Hishammuddin said it was important that the Barisan Nasional had the support of all races, and urged voters to consider this.

“If we win the next general election, I would like to have a reasonable representation of non-Malay votes because we are all stakeholders in Malaysia.

“My biggest fear is not Barisan losing in the general election, but winning without the support of the non-Malays,” he was quoted as saying.
