Store owner says panicked spectators fled past her, scattering her goods.
KLANG: A witness to the fireworks that went wrong last night has shed light on the incident, saying she saw some of the fireworks shoot into the crowd and explode.
The fireworks display was to celebrate the new year at Gegar Klang Fiesta at Padang Sukan Pandamaran here last night.
Fourteen people, including four children, were injured when they were hit by fragments of the fireworks.
According to a witness, Nadia Hassan, 38, who ran a store at the fiesta about 20 metres from the scene, the first display of the fireworks went smoothly without any problem. She said it was the second and third attempts that went wrong when the fireworks, instead of firing into the sky, headed for the spectators and exploded.
“When it happened it sent terrified spectators fleeing the scene seeking shelter. Many of my displayed goods were scattered on the ground after being hit by them,” she said.
Another witness, Radin Mohd Fasbillah, 18, who was working at the same booth during the incident, said the spectators had thronged around the area where the fireworks were launched.
“The front of our booth was full of visitors. Hence, when the fireworks exploded, many ran for shelter and some fell on the ground,” he said.
Meanwhile, a Bernama check at the scene found that the fiesta was still open as scheduled and traders were operating their booths as usual.
There were participants in the leisure cycling event and other programmes went on as scheduled.
The fireworks display was a part of the three-day celebration organised by the Klang Municipal Council that started on Dec 30.
In addition to fireworks, other programmes were booths selling different types of goods: food trucks, clown shows, a motorcycle show, aerobics and leisure cycling.
