PETALING JAYA: A deputy minister has taken former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to task over his controversial remarks that a 1MDB-sponsored pilgrim’s Hajj would be “tidak mabrur” (not accepted).

According to a Mingguan Malaysia report, deputy minister in the prime minister’s department Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki chided Mahathir for “trying to play God”.

“Who is he to question whether someone’s Hajj would be accepted or not? It is not right for him to play God after benefitting from God’s many blessings.”

Asyraf, who is a deputy minister in charge of Islamic Affairs, said only God could decide whether a person’s Hajj was accepted or not, echoing the sentiments of Pahang Mufti Abdul Rahman Osman

“What is important is that a person is sincere in performing the Hajj.”

Earlier today, FMT reported that Dr Mahathir claimed those who used 1MDB money to perform the Hajj will not have their Hajj “accepted” (tidak mabrur).

The fierce 1MDB critic said this was because 1MDB funds were allegedly stolen by Prime Minister Najib Razak.

In the same FMT report, Pahang Mufti Abdul Rahman Osman responded to Dr Mahathir’s comments by saying only God can decide whether a pilgrim’s Hajj is “accepted” (mabrur) or not.

“The pilgrim will become a better person, do more charitable works, and that means the Hajj has been accepted,” he said, adding it had nothing to do with money.

Since 2011, Yayasan 1MDB has sponsored mosque committee members to perform the Hajj.

In 2011, a total of 111 pilgrims from around the country were sent to perform their Hajj. In 2012, this number increased to 400, in 2013 it was 800, in 2014 it was 1,000 and last year, 1,200 pilgrims were sponsored.

In 2016, some 150 people, including imams were sponsored.
